coherence

I worked at coherence from June 2022 until March 2025 as a Product Designer, covering all things design and frontend development.

Coherence

Based in Malmö, Sweden, coherence is a remote-first company building networking tools for multiplayer games. I joined the team in June 2022 at one of the on-site meetups and hit the ground running with learning everything I could about the product and the company.

There was very little design groundwork in place with the company being engineering-led at that stage, so I was tasked with creating a design system and improving all areas of the product with a focus on the online experience. We established foundational user research in Dovetail to inform business decisions and built a design system to support the product, starting with user journeys and user flows.

I introduced the team to FigJam as a tool to allow us to collaborate at a high level and began to build out plans for the product, covering everything from landing pages to onboarding flows and our customer dashboard.

After extensive planning and testing of wireframes and prototypes, I established a design system from the ground up. Starting with foundational components and styles within Figma, I created typography rules, a colour palette, and a component library.

With the release of component properties in Figma, I was able to create highly functional and reusable components that could be used throughout the product by all members of the team without the need for technical understanding of Figma.

These ranged from individual components like buttons and input fields to more complex components like modals and tooltips, all configurable with component properties, offering flexibility through a simple interface.

Alongside managing the company design processes, I was also tasked with onboarding new hires and providing Figma training to the team. To help with this, I created a Figma training course that covered everything from the basics of Figma to more complex topics like component properties and design systems. This formed part of the onboarding process for new hires and was delivered during the first week of their employment.

One of my primary responsibilities was to design our marketing website. I worked closely with our marketing team to create a website that would be a great representation of the company and the product. I also worked closely with the engineering team to ensure the implementation was as close to the design as possible, eventually taking on additional responsibilities for frontend development.

The most complex and challenging part of my role was designing the user dashboard for our online services. There were a lot of highly technical requirements and complicated data sets to implement in a user-friendly way. From organization analytics and project usage to understanding a credit system and how it related directly to billing.

Our customers would spend a lot of time going between our dashboard and our Unity SDK, so it was important to offer a seamless experience between the two. With multiple entry points into the platform, we needed a cohesive onboarding process to guide users through getting started and helping them understand what to do next.

We used PostHog internally to track events and analytics, so I was able to create a dashboard to help the team understand how users were interacting with the product. One of my key metrics to track over time was our customer count. This was a great way to understand the growth of the company and the product, consistently growing over the three years I was there.

Coherence

Another key metric was our active SDK installations as this formed the core of our product. This was also consistent with our customer growth over time and testament to the combined efforts of the entire team.

Finally, hearing from our customers was a great way to understand the impact of our work, especially receiving positive feedback from established companies and developers in the gaming industry.

It's been a great experience working at coherence and I've learned a lot from the team. I'm proud of the work we did and the impact I had on the company. It's also nice to hear from your colleagues who liked having you as part of the team!
